Nilai: Bachelor of Counselling programme at the Faculty of Leadership and Management, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) offers best teaching and learning facilities including 12 counselling labs to give the students practical experiences in enhancing their skills in realistic settings.
According to the President of Counseling Programme, Muhammad Afiq Roslan, there are four types of labs which are individual lab, family lab, group lab and children lab.
“Our labs are provided with 4 multi-functional cameras in each corner of the rooms, together with video recording facilities and multi-camera production technologies.
“This means the counselling sessions can be observed by the lecturers and students through counseling lab settings such as one-way mirrors, or actor-participants settings.”
Afiq also adds that most of the lecturers at the programme are certified counsellors.
“The majority of our lecturers are licensed professional counsellor so they have a lot of experiences in the field. What makes it more unique is that the Counselling programme at USIM is integrated with Islamic teaching, the first of its kind in the country.”
Dr Siti Nubailah Mohd Yusof, the Head Programme of Counselling said, students are required to learn Islamic studies as well as counselling subjects that have been integrated with Islamic values.
“Our students are equipped with the understanding of the Quran and Hadith verses particularly related to Counselling concepts so that they can connect them with Naqli and Aqli concepts.”
The learning experience could help students to provide unique approaches with their clients during counselling sessions and practices.
The major subjects offered in this program are Counselling Theory, Coounselling Philosophy, Developmental Psychology, Psychology of Children and Adolescent, Counselling in Al-Quran and Al-Hadith and Social Psychology.
Dr Nubailah added that the Bachelor Degree in Counselling with honors in USIM is very flexible. This means that graduates from the programme can venture into other areas in the field of counselling.
“In other universities, the Counselling degree tends to get more specific such as counselling in education. However at USIM, the student will learn various areas in counselling such as psychoeducation, career counselling, rehabilitation counselling and others. The curriculum provides more opportunities to students when they engage in working life later.”
Afiq also said that new students will have their own mentor once they join the programme so that they can adapt comfortably during the studies.
The students are also exposed with programs and activities with the communities to put their knowledge into practices such as with school around Negeri Sembilan and with various welfare departments in the country.
Afiq added that one of the best achievements for the programme was organizing ‘Seminar Keluarga Bahagia’ in October 2018, a collaboration with students from the Counselling programme and Dakwah and Islamic Management programme.
Currently there are 295 active students in the counselling programme.
The Faculty of Leadership and Management also offers Master of Counselling (Marriage and Family Counselling), Master of Counselling (Drug Abuse) and Doctoral programme in Counselling.
