Background of the programme

This is one major broad range doctoral program of science and technology with many subdisciplines such as applied physics, industrial chemical technology, food biotechnology, health and industrial technology, actuarial science and risks management, financial mathematics as well as computer science. Students may choose one subdiscipline of interest and proceed with their research work under the field expert supervision.

 

Objectives of the programme

The Doctor of Philosophy in Science and Technology programme is designed to produce:

  • Scientists who can apply and synthesize advanced knowledge and research experience to produce new and advanced knowledge and provide the best expert services to various stakeholders.
  • Scientists who can lead responsibly and are able to communicate confidently and effectively with colleagues, experts in and outside the field and the general public.
  • Scientists who are proficient in interpreting data in numerical and graphical form by using advanced digital technology based on professional ethics and high moral values.
  • Scientists who possess autonomy and independence in managing and developing knowledge and resources, demonstrates leadership and accountability for their work, and makes significant contributions and provides services in their respective field.

Programme Learning Outcome

  • Demonstrate critical, systematic, complex, and up-to-date understanding of ideas in the field of study being conducted.
  • Conduct research studies that are accepted by field experts through critical, systematic, complex, up-to-date, and advanced analysis using various analytical methods and skills.
  • Skilled in planning, mastering, and implementing current and advanced methodologies and tools in the field of study.
  • Collaborate effectively and ethically with fellow researchers, field experts within and outside the country, and the general community.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously in presenting research ideas and results both orally and in writing to fellow researchers, experts in the field domestically and internationally, as well as to the general community
  • Skilled in managing and performing critical analysis using various recent and advanced digital methods to solve research in related fields.

  • Demonstrate leadership, professional, independent, and autonomy in seeking references and conducting research in related fields.
  • Responsible for the work results and contribute significant research results by combining various branches of knowledge in continuously seeking solutions in the related field of study.
  • Conduct research with minimal supervision and adhere to legislation, ethics, and professional codes of practice.

Depending on the sub-disciplines :

  • Computer Science - Senior Systems Engineer, MIS Manager, CIO, Network Manager, Cybersecurity Senior Officer, Scientist, Lecturer.
  • Actuarial Science – Data Scientist, Statistician Risks Management – Risk Analyst, Credit Risk Analysts, Risk Manager, Risk Consultant
  • Food Biotechnology - Biotechnologist,
  • Financial Mathematics – Financial mathematician Industrial Chemistry – Researcher, Instructor, Chemist. Applied Physics – Researcher, Instructor. Health Industry Technology – Researcher, Instructor.
  1. A master’s degree in the field or related fields accepted by the Senate; or
  2. Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia.
  3. Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the Senate/University.
  4. A Bachelor’s degree with the following conditions:
    i. a bachelor's degree in the field or related fields with first-class (CGPA of 3.67 or higher) or its equivalent from an academic ornTechnical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme;
    ii. undergo internal assessment; and
    iii. any other requirements of the Senate.
  5. Bachelor’s degree candidates who are registered for master’s degree programmes may apply to convert to the doctoral degree programmes subjected to the following conditions:
    i. within 1 year for full time and within 2 years for part-time candidates;
    ii. having shown competency and capability in conducting research at doctorallevel through rigorous internal evaluation by the Senate.; and
    iii. approval of the Senate.

Note: 1-year work experience is equivalent to 0.05 CGPA

(1)  An applicant shall show evidence of proficiency in the English language based on the following criteria: 

  1. TOEFL minimum score of 180 (computer-based) or 64 (internet-based); or
  2. IELTS minimum score of Band 5; or
  3. MUET minimum score of Band 3; or
  4. graduated from institutions that use English as the main medium of instruction, AND will be required to seat for University English Proficiency Test (UEPT) with minimum score of Band 3; or
  5. graduated in the field of Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL), English Language Studies (ELS) and equivalent from a university recognised by the Senate; or
  6. a native speaker of English.

(2)  Research-mode applicant who intends to write his/her thesis in Arabic will be required to fulfil the criteria as follows:

  1. TOEFL minimum score of 150 (computer-based) or 52 (internet-based); or
  2. IELTS minimum score of Band 4; or
  3. MUET minimum score of Band 2; or
  4. UEPT minimum score of Band 2.

(3)  An applicant who does not fulfil any of the criteria under (1) & (2) will be allowed to register conditionally and is required to fulfil any of the criteria under (1) or (2), within 12 months (for Master’s students) and 24 months (for Ph.D. students).
